High intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

WHAT IS HIGH-INTENSITY FOCUS ULTRASOUND?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-invasive alternative to active surveillance, surgery or radiation therapy for the treatment of early stage or recurrent prostate cancers. This type of therapy uses focused ultrasound waves to thermally destroy a portion of tissue using intense heat. This heat causes tissue coagulation necrosis, cavitation, and heat shock in the cells.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF HIFU?

HIFU is not suitable for use in some areas of the body as ultrasound waves have a negative effect on some materials, though these effects can be avoided by doing the procedure under magnetic resonance imaging.

The risks of this procedure are felt by non-target specific sonification, which is the tissue surrounding the area being treated by ultrasound waves. Another risk is the incomplete destruction of the lesion due to inadequate heating.

IS HIFU SAFE FOR THE FACE?

HIFU can be considered a safe, effective, non-invasive and painless procedure which can replace facelifts. Ultrasound energy encourages the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin.

The first reported use of HIFU for aesthetic use was in 2008. HIFU was then approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for brow lifts. The device was also cleared by the FDA in 2014 to improve lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and neckline (décolletage).

HOW LONG DOES HIFU TREATMENT LAST?

The length of the treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, while a chest treatment on its own takes approximately 30 minutes.

After your HIFU Treatment, you may see some initial effect, but the ultimate results will take place over 2-3 months, as your body naturally regenerates collagen. Since the procedure stimulates your own collagen production, how long the results last really depends on you. The treatment produces new collagen on the inside, but your natural aging process will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside.
